people like this in my generation make me worry.
I really don’t understand why she’s getting so much hate on tumblr. Well, yes, I kind of can based on who exactly is hating her so much. She’s just talking about her own experiences and you can’t help but generalize when you’re talking about your own experiences. She even said at the beginning that these “rules” weren’t set in stone. I for one dealt with and continue to deal with these very issues when it comes to dating Korean men. The shyness I think comes not such much from Korean masculinity, but speaking in English. It’s difficult to be confident in a foreign language, and when you’re trying to flirt with someone it can be very nerve racking. I’ve had Korean-Korean guy friends who spoke English just fine, but just didn’t want to in front of native speakers. Most of the time, once I start speaking in Korean with them the shyness evaporates because the pressure is gone. Both parties make mistakes in their second language and it’s a level playing field.
I also think it’s important to say that Kerri’s dating videos have always been about dating. Dating means getting to know a person, building a relationship with them, etc. Not hooking up with random guys you meet on the street, not friends with benefits, not meeting random strangers on Who’s Here for a make-out session in a dvd room, not drunk clubbers you take home with you, or any of the other behavior that is called “dating” on tumblr. And if we eliminate all of the tumblr blogs that classify this as “dating,” you’ll find that very few are actual daters. Very few actually give advice on having a relationship with a Korean man, not just an intimate one. So yes, while the video is long and kind of boring these are still her experiences and they happen mirror mine as well. I expect I might get some hate mail for this too, but as Johnny Cash said, “It’s good to know who hates you, and it’s good to be hated by the right people.”
